This was a brief set by the Design Factory with an intent to take an everyday object and see if it could be improved upon. Highlighting the fact that just because it is used everyday doesn’t mean it can’t be improved upon for user satisfaction.
My object choice was the DVD case as I personally feel they could be improved. The issues for me being the illegibility of text included and the awkward and sometimes damaging removal of the disk itself. In my solution I decided to actually increase the surface area available to allow breathing room for the text and finding a different approach to the mechanism holding the disk in place.
To increase the surface area of the case I added extra pages to the case, which I chose to be made from card. Although card might not be as durable as plastic, I feel it will add to the overall experience of buying a DVD, creating a collectible item to help promotion. With the advent of technology and online capabilities, DVDs are becoming almost obsolete.
With the base material being changed, the holding mechanism could then be addressed. I felt a simple solution was needed and decided to utilize the use of small plastic ‘nipples’ that hold the disk in place, while at the same time removing the original issues of the old design.
